Activities in Kilkee

Along with bathing on the strand, swimmers can choose from the Pollock Holes, New Found Out and Byrnes Cove. The Pollock Holes, on the west end of town, are three natural rock-enclosed pools, with water that is changed by every tide. The Pollock Holes are hugely popular with visitors to the town.

The diving boards at New Found Out allow for dives of up to 13 metres (45 feet) into the open sea. Every year there is a huge entry, sometimes in the hundreds, for the Bay Swim which is a race from the east end of the town to the west end across the bay. The last weekend in June sees an influx of triathletes as Kilkee hosts the Hell of the West Triathlon, the longest running triathlon in the country, this is one of the biggest and toughest triathlons in the Triathlon Ireland schedule with upwards of 600 athletes taking part in a 1500 metre swim, 45km cycle and finishing with a hard 10km road race, Kilkee is also a mecca for divers.

Jacques Cousteau declared that it was the best diving spot in Europe. The Kilkee Dive Centre, is a fully-equipped SCUBA diving centre which caters to both beginners and experts. Divers can go to depths from 10 metres (32 feet) to 45 metres (147 feet). The diverse marine life attracts divers from around the world. Kilkee is home to an 18-hole golf course. The first and second tees overlook the Atlantic Ocean and the third tee overlooks Chimney Bay.

Tivoli Cup

A committee of Kilkee locals and holiday makers have decided to resurrect the famed "Tivoli Cup" as part of the Cois Fharraige weekend.

The cup is the emblem of a long-running "racquets" competition that is played against the plastered white walls on Kilkee beach - a game unique to the seaside town. Racquets, a mix of squash and handball, is played against a large white wall, and the Tivoli Cup competition dates back to 1935. It was traditionally a mixed doubles competition and was played regularly every summer from 1940s to the 1970s and was last played in 1993. Hell raising film star Richard Harris won the trophy four times in a row (1948-1951), a record that still stands. A statue was unveiled in honour of Harris and his racquets exploits in recent years in Kilkee.Harris in fact commissioned a replica of the trophy in 1997, intending that it would be available for future tournaments.

To coincide with the Cois Fharraige festival, the newly formed Tivoli Cup committee intend to run the tournament on Saturday and Sunday, September 12-13 on Kilkee beach.

The tournament is an open grade competition for players over 16 years of age, and entry will be strictly limited on a first come first served basis. Due to tides and limited time available, the draw will be restricted to a certain number of players, to be decided by the committee. The committee reserve right of entry and will announce the rules of the competition in due course.
